The emergency department includes more than 60 patient treatment areas. There are resuscitation bays (like this one), an ED observation unit, an area of patients with less severe illness or injuries, as well as a recently expanded pediatric emergency department.

The birthing center features 15 private maternity suites in which patients stay throughout labor, delivery and recovery. The rooms are large, providing enough room to include a support person and a whirlpool tub that can be used during labor or after delivery. With the support of the
Breidegam Foundation, frequent updates and new fixtures enhance the home-like, low-risk, midwifery birth experience that has earned it high marks from patients.

Hershey Medical Center is the only medical facility in Pennsylvania to be accredited as a Level 1 trauma center for both children and adults, with more than 70,000 annual emergency visits. The Emergency Department at Hershey Medical Center operates under an innovative care model: Patients are greeted at registration by a nurse, then taken to a care initiation area and assessed by a physician as soon as possible. After a physician determines the level of care needed, patients are either moved into a room or to the waiting area. In the waiting area, nurses and emergency department technicians continuously check vital signs and monitor patients.
An expansion project expected to be complete by September 2020 will add four more exam bays, two more treatment rooms, a dedicated sexual assault exam area, an expanded decontamination and infectious disease isolation area, and other support spaces. Today the Emergency Department includes two trauma bays, a 12-bed observation unit, and staff work/support areas, including a resident work station. A dedicated 16-room pediatric emergency department, designed with all negative air pressure rooms to be a “flex space” for highly infectious diseases, served as a COVID-19 patient treatment area.

The Cryo-Electron Microscopy core facility at Penn State College of Medicine houses two cryo transmission EMs, including the new 300 kV Titan Krios, which is equipped for state-of-the-art imaging of purified protein complexes, viruses and cells in their frozen-hydrated state. In addition, the Zeiss LSM 980 Cryo-Confocal microscope allows for correlative cryo-fluorescent and electron microscopy within whole cells. Penn State Health Medical Group – Mechanicsburg, in Cumberland County, offers family medicine, internal medicine and neurology services. The building design is based on “lean” principles, and will allow for the patient's entire visit – from intake to check out – to occur in the same room, allowing for smoother transitions and greater privacy than in a traditional practice setting. A real-time location system – technology that uses ceiling sensors, personal badges and mapping software to manage the location of providers, staff and patients throughout the practice. The system is aimed at improving staff efficiency, resulting in reduced wait time for patients. Patients seen at the practice who require additional diagnostic or therapeutic services, such as lab work or physical therapy, or those who need referrals to medical or surgical specialty care, can access these services at the nearby Camp Hill practice site, located six miles away. Construction began in June on Penn State Health's third West Shore outpatient location, Penn State Health Medical Group - Upper Allen. A fourth Cumberland County location, Penn State Health Medical Group - East Pennsboro, will open in fall 2020 at the Highmark corporate campus on Center Street in East Pennsboro Township.

The Clinical Simulation Center has more than 9,500 square feet of dedicated simulation space with state-of-the-art simulators including computer-controlled manikins, task trainers, virtual reality flat screen simulators, and clinical equipment.
Ten small encounter rooms are available for one-on-one or small group training with standardized patients (SPs), manikins or task trainers. Each room has two cameras and audio plus an auxiliary input for capturing signals from patient equipment or manikin monitors. There are three large bays for larger groups or to accommodate specific environmental layouts, such as an ICU or operating room with real equipment and monitoring or an ED trauma bay. Skills are practiced in one of two spaces: the virtual reality room is equipped with virtual reality trainers, phantoms and box trainers; the skills task training room has individual task trainers and non-anatomic models. All rooms can be recorded for debriefing or instructor learning.
Located on the ground floor of the Crescent, the PA Program office supports prospective and current PA students as they navigate their College of Medicine training. The Physician Assistant program at Penn State College of Medicine is a 24-month, 101-credit full-time graduate program that enrolls 30 students each May. Students graduating from the PA Program will be awarded a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree. The College's first class graduated in May 2016. Each year, the program reports results of the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination, or PANCE. Through 2019, 100 percent of College of Medicine PA students passed the test on their first try. The College of Medicine's PA program is also the defending state and national champion of The Medical Challenge Bowl.

Located at 4301 N. 5th Street, Penn State Health Muhlenberg Outpatient Center is a 11,000 square foot facility that offers primary care services and additional services such as lab testing, x-ray, physical therapy, EKG testing and Work Care, St. Joseph’s health program for employers. The centerpiece of the new facility (spring 2020) is a 7-day-a-week, walk-in urgent care clinic with early morning, evening and weekend hours. As with many Medical Group practices, COVID-19 screening is handled in a tented area outside the practice site to minimize exposure from anyone who may have symptoms.

Penn State Health Heart & Vascular Institute offers state-of-the-art electrophysiology operating room equipped to assist with patients with cardiac arrhythmias and conduction disorders by offering the most technologically advanced care of pacemakers, defibrillation therapy or ablation therapy.
The Heart and Vascular Institute provides a full range of non-invasive diagnostic cardiac procedures for both adult and pediatric patients. Services include Nuclear Stress Testing and Stress Echocardiography with and without pharmacologic agents, Stress Testing, Metabolic Stress Testing, Holter application and Holter Scanning, EKG and Signal Averaged EKG. The Cardiology Services Department also includes Pacemaker Clinic services that include transtelephonic monitoring of pacemakers and arrhythmia event monitors as well as implantable pacemaker and defibrillator device programming and interrogation.

Patients in this area include those recovering from coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve replacements, video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) procedures, vascular bypass grafting, amputations, heart failure, myocardial infarction (MI), LVAD and heart transplant patients.

Penn State Health Rehab Hospital has 94-beds dedicated to the care and treatment of patients who need rehabilitation. Our specialists are trained to provide rehabilitation for minimally conscious patients who have experienced blood blockages in the brain, near drowning or other traumatic injuries; recovery from surgeries; spinal cord injuries; traumatic brain injuries; cerebral palsy or ventilator dependence.
The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) offers advanced life-saving and support to critically ill children and teens. The unit currently has an 18-bed capacity, but will soon expand to 22 beds in Fall 2020 due to the need of the community.
The pediatric therapy gym is designed specifically for children and adolescents of all ages and abilities. We feature three main therapy areas to include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Our physical therapy gym has a full array of exercise equipment biomechanically designed to fit children.
The new Penn State Women and Babies Center set to open in November 2020 has been expanded to double the capacity of women and babies it can care for. The new floor is complete with triage rooms; private labor and delivery rooms; spacious postpartem rooms for care after childbirth; dedicated Hummingbird labor and delivery rooms for surrogacy, adoption or palliative care; and state-of-the-art caesarian section operating rooms. All in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
The private parent/infant rooms are designed so the parents can stay overnight with the baby prior to being discharged to ensure the parents know how to care for their baby at home.
The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center admits four residents per year and offers many opportunities for growth and experience in the medical field. As one of the training locations, the Penn State Health Rehab Hospital is a 98-bed facility (22 of them dedicated to transitional care), a Wound Care Center and an Outpatient Day Program. The Rehab Hospital is both Joint Commission and CARF-accredited.
As the central hub of the facility, the nurses station is located by the inpatient therapy gym and inpatient rooms to keep a close eye on patients throghout the day.
The new 56-bed NICU, slated to open in November 2020, is located on the 8th floor of the Penn State Children’s Hospital. The NICU will use a “hybrid room model” – a mix of private rooms (for singletons, twins and triplets) and three six-bedded rooms. Very premature infants will initially be admitted into quiet, private rooms to limit stimulation that can be overwhelming to a premature infant. However, once medically stable and off ventilators, these infants will be moved to one of the 6-bedded rooms, where they will experience sufficient human voice. The hybrid room model assures that these newborns will have improved neurodevelopmental outcomes. All rooms will allow families the ability to room-in with their infant, where they will be actively engaged in the care of their baby and grow comfortable with the specialized care their newborn.
There are two large, state-of-the-art cesarean delivery rooms that are equipped for both low- and high-risk procedures as well as single and multiple births.
The new Penn State Women and Babies Center, which opened in 2020, has been expanded to increase the number of families we serve. The floor has spacious private rooms for all of our patients’ needs, including obstetrical triage, labor and delivery, antepartum care and postpartum care. It is equipped with a well-baby nursery. The cesarean suite includes a pre- and post-operative care center and state of-the-art operating rooms. There is a dedicated Hummingbird room on labor and delivery floor, which includes additional space for families with palliative care needs. Great care has been taken to create a warm and welcoming environment for all of our patients and their families.
Located in the PIMCU and other locations in the Children’s Hospital, negative pressure rooms help prevent airborne diseases (such as tuberculosis) from escaping the room and infecting other people. A machine pulls air into the room. Then it filters the air before moving it outside.
The 6th floor has spacious private postpartum rooms as well as a well baby nursery for care of mothers and infants after birth.

At the heart of the Family Medicine Inpatient Service is the Family & Community Medicine Residency Program. Residents will work closely with the inpatient team, and assume a panel of patients with the goal of providing direct patient care from the admission to discharge and follow-up. The private inpatient rooms are fitted with a companion convertible couch/bed for loved ones, a private bathroom, a closet for patient belongings, a large TV and in-room workstation, a room control panel and responder and a hand wash area.

The blood bank and transfusion service provides the necessary pre transfusion testing for the transfusion of blood and blood products per year in Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Testing platforms include conventional tube testing, automated and manual solid phase testing, and manual gel testing. The reference lab section of the blood bank performs complex immunohematology testing and antibody identification methods. The blood bank also works up suspected transfusion reactions, prenatal and newborn antigen and antibody testing, and processes autologous and allogeneic blood collected in the Blood Collection Center. The blood bank is accredited by the AABB and CAP.
The Zebrafish Functional Genomics Core at the Penn State College of Medicine was established to provide the Penn State research community with a modern, centralized facility for housing, breeding and performing experiments with zebrafish, one of the fastest-growing model systems in biomedical research. The mission of the core is to provide a physical and intellectual infrastructure for investigators whose research can benefit from use of the zebrafish as a model system.
Private antepartum rooms are available when pregnancy complications require close monitoring of both the mother and the baby in close proximity to Labor and Delivery, the cesarean suite, and the NICU. Penn State Health’s new antepartum unit helps by providing a comfortable, nurturing and homelike place. The antepartum rooms are just steps away from the inpatient Maternal Fetal Medicine ultrasound suite as well as the welcoming patient lounge.

The Hummingbird suite is an expanded labor and delivery suite that is available to families delivering babies with serious health conditions that are life-limiting. Although their time together with their baby may be short, our goal is to provide our families with a comfortable and supportive environment for the birth of their child. Our team offers palliative and supportive care plans that take into account the individual values and needs of each family.
Sponsored by the Ronald McDonald House Charities of central PA, the Family Lounge gives family members of children in our hospital a place to relax, take a break and get a snack. Situated between Penn State Children's Hospital and Penn State Cancer Institute, this is the front door to clinical activity on the Hershey campus. Campus shuttle service stops here from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., offering service to any parking garage or other campus building as well as tracking online or via a mobile app. The main entrance is home to Hospital Admissions, a main information desk, Starbucks and a courtyard.
Anyone entering the main entrance must go through the COVID-19 screening area to access the rest of the hospital building. The second floor of the main entrance houses a media center/conference space with teleconference capability, which is a popular space for training, internal events and small public events, including press conferences.
The Rotunda Café – Hershey Medical Center's main cafeteria – offers a variety of food from sushi and salads to grilled and chilled items, plus a full dining room and courtyard, or take-out options. Enhanced cleaning, modified operations and adherence to infection prevention measures like masking and social distancing are in effect due to COVID-19.
This is the hallway off the main lobby of Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. On your left, you will see the Courtyard, where you can enjoy a coffee from Starbucks or your lunch. This area is currently still under construction. Straight ahead, this hallway will lead you to the rotunda, which serves as the central navigation for the hospital, the cafeteria, the inpatient rooms of the hospital and the surgical waiting area.
A dedicated 16-room pediatric emergency department, designed with all negative air pressure rooms to be a “flex space” for highly infectious diseases, served as a COVID-19 patient treatment area.
Located on the fourth floor of the hospital, the Neuro ICU provides specialized intensive care following surgial treatment of stroke, seizures, brain tumors, headache and brain or spine trauma, among other diagnoses. This transitional care unit can flex to provide this high-level care to as many as 30+ patients at a time. The unit has state-of-the-art equipment including portable CT, a dedicated STEALTH unit and multimodality monitoring—ICP, Hemedex Perfusion, PbtO2 and Moberg CNS monitoring systems with continuous EEG capability. Each room also is equipped with teleICU technology, which allows patients to be monitored 24 hours a day.

The Penn State Health Rehab Hospital has a total of 98 beds - including 66 adult inpatient rehabilitation beds, 10 pediatric inpatient rehabilitations beds and 22 transitional care beds. Through a partnership with Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Select Medical, we offer the very latest rehabilitative care, right here in Central Pennsylvania.
Hershey Medical Center’s second floor is dominated by Perioperative Services. From the main OR desk on the north hallway, staff can use the Surginet board to monitor patient flow in and out of 29 operating rooms and two procedure rooms for adults. An OR staff lounge and the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) recovery rooms are located down the south hallway (across from the main OR desk). Around the corner from the OR desk looking east is a staff locker room along the corridor that leads to the Surgical and Anesthesia Intensive Care Unit (SAICU), Same-Day Admissions and pre-operative care spaces. Past Same-Day Admissions, the corridor leads to a walking bridge that connects to the Children’s Hospital surgical unit—including nine pediatric ORs—and the University Physician Center, home to a variety of outpatient specialty practices.
Even while on the ground floor of Penn State Cancer Institute, patients waiting for radiation/oncology appointments can enjoy a view of the outdoors, thanks to an atrium that goes from ground floor to the fourth floor, bringing in natural light to help with healing. The five-story atrium is just one detail of the Cancer Institute's patient-focused design. The Cancer Institute provides the latest in radiation treatement for all types of cancer, including Gamma knife radiosurgery and the latest Trubeam linear accelerator. A renovation scheduled to start yet this summer and complete by early 2022 will make Hershey Medical Center the first in the region to offer a new specialized 4D imaging technology for planning and treatment delivery that will allow greater precision to accurately treat tumors while sparing healthy tissue.
Penn State Cancer Institute investigators and trainees conduct basic science, translational and clinical research in three programmatic areas to help advance the fight against cancer: Next-Generation Therapies, Mechanisms of Carcinogenesis and Cancer Control. In the Cancer Institute, research labs are surrounded by faculty and student work and meeting space on the 3rd and 4th floors above clinical spaces in a building model designed to facilitate interactions between clinicians, researchers and learners that enable insights to benefit patient care and research in real time. Research labs like this one are available throughout the College of Medicine to help investigators focus on their work.
Infusion Therapy consists of two distinct areas: Infusion Services and Day Infusion (an area utilized primarily by our post-bone marrow transplant patients and hematology patients who need close monitoring after being discharged from the hospital). Specially trained and certified nurses who specialize in oncology nursing provide cancer chemotherapy treatments, non-chemotherapy drug administration, blood products, lab draws from central venous catheters, hydration and antibiotics. Building design featuring glass walls allow all patients to enjoy an outside view while patients can access a limited access healing garden during nice weather.
As the only Level I pediatric trauma center between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Penn State Children’s Hospital offers more than 20 pediatric specialties in Hershey and more than 30 outpatient locations throughout Pennsylvania. The freestanding Children’s Hospital offers 72 private patient rooms with family support space built in plus pediatric surgical and imaging units and an outpatient pediatric hematology/oncology clinic. From the main Children’s hospital entrance, patients or siblings can follow a variety of animal tracks or peek into tree “knot holes” for a view of Pennsylvania wildlife throughout the seasons. Two unique organizations - the Children's Miracle Network at Penn State Children’s Hospital and Four Diamonds - help pay for pediatric research, patient bills, programs, equipment, and specialty care providers. In fall 2020, three additional floors of the Children’s Hospital opened, providing more space for a co-located state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit and the highest-level neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Penn State Children’s Hospital has playrooms—like this one on the Children’s Hospital third floor—teen lounges, a performance stage, and other fun activities for patients and their siblings. These spaces are one way Child Life staff provides a variety of support services to patients and their families.
Child Life staff help children and families feel better about surgeries, procedures, and hospital stays through medical play, photos, tours and discussions. They share information that’s specific to each patient, and at the right level for his or her age and understanding.
A resident lounge on the Children's Hospital first floor offers pediatric residents’ space to work and teach as well as rest, eat, watch television or study during downtime all while in close proximity to their patients. Each resident is provided their own locker and mailbox.
Located on the Children's Hospital first floor near the resident lounge, Treehouse Cafe and Starbucks, this lecture/conference room is heavily used by pediatric residents for patient care sign outs, noon conferences and academic half-day didactics. A nearby garden, courtyard and meditation space offer wellness opportunities during downtime.
Located inside the Institute for Personalized Medicine space on the College's second floor, the Genome Sciences Facility provides consultation, instrumentation, and services in genomic, epigenomic, and transcriptomic studies, from highly focused analysis of candidate SNPs and mRNAs to whole genome, exome, epigenome, and transcriptome sequencing.
Penn State College of Medicine's Flow Cytometry Core, located on the College's third floor, is designed to facilitate leading-edge research by providing state-of-the-art fluorescence-activated cell sorting and analytical services at reasonable hourly rates. The facility provides three full-time staff and a faculty director to help investigators with all aspects of data collection including experiment design. In addition, Penn State Cancer Institute and Penn State College of Medicine investigators can access six different types of flow cytometers for many common research applications, including immunology, cell cycle and cell growth,
cell function and activation, cell differentiation, apoptosis, platelet activation, toxicology and green fluorescent protein detection.
The Dean's Office of Penn State College of Medicine sits just inside the main College of Medicine entrance along the historic Crescent hallway. The College of Medicine's first dean, Dr. George T. Harrell, asked the architect to design the building with its signature shape to symbolize how the College and Medical Center would embrace its home community of Hershey, Pa. Dr. Kevin Black is the interim dean of Penn State College of Medicine.
The College of Medicine's main entrance sits at the west end of the Crescent building that runs east to the hospital's North Entrance and Emergency Department. Students, post-docs, faculty and staff who use the main College entrance must comply with a COVID-19 screening process. The Dean's Offices sit just to the right of the entrance screening area. Various educational and research administrative offices line either end of the Crescent hallway as you turn left or right from the main entrance. Several art installations in the lobby reflect the College's rich history of the humanities in medicine; the Department of Humanities – which was the first at any medical school in the nation – sits along the hallway straight ahead of the main entrance, as does the Au Bon Pain cafe and the administration offices of the Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
Located on the first floor of the College's Biomedical Research Building adjacent to Student Affairs and near Student Admissions, the Office of Student Aid can help you understand your options, apply for financial assistance and make well-informed choices about financing your education.Most students in the College of Medicine's MD program rely on financial aid to help pay for their education and housing expenses. In 2018-19, 91.5% of our students received some form of financial aid. Sources of aid at the College of Medicine include need-based university loans awarded by the Office of Student Aid and federal loans (Direct Unsubsidized and GradPlus), and merit- and need-based university scholarships awarded by the Office of Student Aid.

Au Bon Pain is a popular place for students, faculty and staff to grab breakfast, lunch or coffee while catching up with colleagues. Limited seating is available inside but the café also opens up to the College of Medicine's courtyard, with more plentiful seating options--within social distance guidelines of course.
The breezeway that connects the hospital and College of Medicine also connects two lovely outdoor areas, the Rotunda Café courtyard and the College of Medicine courtyard. Both are popular places for lunch or to meet up with colleagues or students. The College of Medicine courtyard is home to Hershey's own Nittany Lion Shrine. Social distancing guidelines are in effect in all outdoor seating areas due to COVID-19. Previously, the courtyard has hosted summer concert series presented by Center Stage, a Department of Humanities' program designed to create an environment that integrates the healing power of art, music and creativety at Penn State Health.
Located along the Crescent hallway on the first floor of the College, the Office of Medical Education offers support to current and prospective College of Medicine MD students. The College of Medicine offers a patientcentered, systems-focused medical education program leading to the MD degree. Its central campus in Hershey, PA., is adjacent to Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, which is a part of Penn State Health's multi-hospital health system. In addition to the program's central curriculum in Hershey, there are two parallel options within the overall medical education program. Or Accelerated Pathways options are located on the central campus in Hershey, and our University Park Curriculum is located in University Park, Pa. All students will be expected to meet our
10 competencies and minimum essential standards before graduating with an MD degree.

The Harrell Health Sciences Library: Research and Learning Commons is central—functionally and geographically— to the provision of biomedical information resources and expertise in support of the education, research, patient care, and community outreach missions of the College of Medicine and Hershey Medical Center. The library connects the College of Medicine and Hershey Medical Center on the ground level and is accessible both from the Crescent hallway and from the hospital and College of Medicine courtyards. The library offers print and electronic books, journals and databases to meet staff and faculty learning and research needs, as well as clinical information databases that physicians use in their clinical practice.
The library is a 24-hour facility and was completely renovated in 2016, with new small study rooms for students to reserve, a One Button Studio for professional-level audio and video recording and a technology sandbox for experimentation with emerging technologies such as virtual reality and 3D printing.
The Clinical Research Center on the fourth floor of Hershey Medical Center offers investigators dedicated space for clinical research using human subjects. Clinical Research Center nursing staff members work in partnership with investigators to ensure proper and complete implementation of the protocol, precisely documenting interventions and participant response. In addition to general clinical consult rooms, the research center has as an observational study suite with two observation rooms. Each room includes one-way mirrored windows, reclining chair, desk and chair, special ventilation systems and audio/video capabilities.
This is a typical one-bedroom appartment in University Manor, the College's on-campus student housing complex, with locations on the east and west sides of campus. University Manor offers unfurnished one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartment options and an unfurnished four-bedroom option. Student housing is connected to walking and biking trails across the campus and into the community of Hershey and Derry Twp.

This space on the College's second floor houses the Genomics Sciences Facility and the research lab space of the Penn State Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The Institute provides research tools, advanced biostatistical expertise, funding programs for exploration of unique ideas and through a dedicated team for including the community more effectively into research. Through Institute programs, Penn State has several opportunities for its medical and graduate students, including a dual degree in clinical and translational science. The Institute also invests in Penn State’s early-career scientists through a scholar program that helps faculty devote more time to their research while promoting collaboration and presenting translational research basics. Located on the west side of the Hershey campus, the University Fitness Center is an exclusive health and wellness facility serving College of Medicine students and alumni and the Penn State Health community. Membership includes access to the cardiovascular and strength training rooms, the gymnasium, free group fitness classes, racquetball and squash court usage, and the facility locker rooms. Personal training and specialty programming are available for additional charges.

The Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit (PIMCU) provides a critical care step down unit for less acute patients that range from infants to adolescents that require treatment for severe illnesses and injuries. The wide variety of patient types and advanced therapies include pediatric trauma, pediatric cardiology with telemetry, pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, kidney transplant and pediatric pulmonology, including patients with tracheostomies on ventilators.

A welcoming, open space, the lobby is the portal into the 204-bed acute care facility in Reading, PA. Thousands of patients and visitors a year stream past the iconic Nittany Lion statue out front as they enter the facility for treatment or to visit loved ones.
Opened in early 2019, the hybrid cardiac cath lab combines the features of a cardiac cath lab with those of an operating room, allowing for more complex interventions. The single, hybrid space lets specialists perform a range of procedures to treat structural and coronary heart disease, repair endovascular aneurysms and even perform cardiac surgery, if needed – without moving the patient. It is the first part of a five-phase, $13.5 million project to reconfigure four existing cardiac catheterization labs to create two new hybrid labs, while also equipping an existing electrophysiology lab and two remaining cardiac catheterization labs with the latest technology.
Located on the ground floor of the medical center, the Penn State Health Breidegam Family Birthing Center is a secured unit requiring badge or video ‘doorbell’ access. There are two nurses stations in the unit, with the central station being where a majority of the work flow originates and a second location providing a quiet area for physicians and nurses to work. At both stations, providers have the ability to complete documentation, view the central fetal monitoring system and patient tracking board, as well as converse with staff.
One of the highlights of the birthing center is a large, well-equipped OR that is used for all cesarean deliveries and a high-tech, high-intervention approach to birth, when necessary. When a problem is anticipated, all the resources needed, including the nearby NICU and neonatologists who are on call 24/7, are at providers’ fingertips.
Inpatient pediatric care is provided by a pediatric hospitalist team at St. Joseph Medical Center. Through a partnership with Penn State Children's Hospital, pediatric specialists are available to care for children from Berks County close to home, while still having access to the resources and expertise of Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
Penn State Health St. Joseph Orthopedics is expanding its footprint to provide patients with greater access to general and specialty orthopedic services. Located on the second floor of the Medical Office Building on the Bern Township campus, the practice's close proximity to St. Joseph Medical Center means its skilled surgeons have ready access to the advanced technologies their patients need for diagnosis and treatment, including surgical interventions.
Situated between the medical center and Medical Office Building on St. Joseph's Bern Township campus, the Healing Garden is a quiet space to reflect and rest. It includes items, such as plantings, statuary, bricks and benches, dedicated to deceased co-workers and others.
When St. Joseph Regional Health Network joined Penn State Health in 2015 and signage was unveiled with the Penn State Health St. Joseph name, the Nittany lion statue was also unveiled and became a fixture on the Bern Township campus symbolizing the partnership.
The new 56-bed NICU opened in November 2020, located on the 8th floor of the Penn State Children’s Hospital. The NICU uses a “hybrid room model” – a mix of private rooms (for singletons, twins and triplets) and three six-bedded rooms. Very premature infants are initially admitted into quiet, private rooms to limit stimulation that can be overwhelming to a premature infant. However, once medically stable and off ventilators, these infants are moved to one of the 6-bedded rooms, where they will experience sufficient human voice. The hybrid room model assures that these newborns will have improved neurodevelopmental outcomes. All rooms allow families the ability to room-in with their infant, where they are actively engaged in the care of their baby and grow comfortable with the specialized care their newborn.

The Heart and Vascular Institute Critical Care Unit (HVICCU) is a 30 bed an acuity-adaptable intensive care unit specializing in advanced cardiac critical care diagnoses. This area is dedicated for the care of complex, multi-system health issues of a cardiac and/or cardiorespiratory origin. Patients in this unit have a wide variety of mechanical circulatory support devices, including (but not limited to): extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), left ventricular assist device (LVAD), biventricular assist device (Bi-VAD), right ventricular assist device (RVAD), total artificial heart and intra-aortic balloon pump.
Located on the first floor near Au Bon Pain, the Office for Professional Mental Health provides personal counseling and mental health support services for Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center students, medical residents and fellows, physicians and faculty.
