Supporting long-term recovery
Recovery is a process that takes a lifetime. It's easier to get help when you have it. You can expect to be able to transition smoothly from treatment to recovery and introduce you into support groups. Support options are available to anyone, whether you're in treatment or supporting someone you love.
Because of the perceived high prices of addiction treatment, only a very small portion of those who need it pursue treatment. But the cost of rehab is negligible compared with the potential social and health consequences of not getting treatment. These negative consequences can be avoided by seeking help as soon as possible.
Millions of Americans live with an addiction every day. A 2016 U.S. surgeon general report estimated that nearly 21 million Americans have a substance abuse disorder. Only 10% receive substance abuse treatment.
Why? This is partly because of the cost. Nearly 40% of Americans who had a substance abuse disorder and needed treatment in 2014 didn't attend rehab because they couldn't afford it or did not have insurance.
The cost of treatment can be far lower than the cost associated with addiction. Many people don't realize that insurance can help reduce the cost of rehabilitation. The new law requires insurance companies to cover mental health and addiction treatment.
How Much Does Rehab Cost
Each level of treatment in addiction centers across the country is different. Patients with more severe substance abuse disorders will likely require intensive and prolonged treatment. Standard treatment is generally more expensive than intensive care.
Detox
Detoxification is the process of removing drugs from the body and safely ending withdrawal. Based on data from drug treatment facilities in the United States, the average cost for a 30-day detox program is $250 to $800 per person.
Residential Treatment
Basic residential treatment can cost between $2,000 to $20,000. This includes assessments and supervision around the clock. Long-term residential care that lasts 60 to 90 days may be twice as expensive.
For 30 days of treatment, luxury rehab facilities may charge upwards to $25,000 Private treatment centers usually charge less.
Outpatient Rehab
Individuals can receive outpatient treatment while they live at home. Patients learn how to live drug-free at home through a series of appointments. A three-month outpatient program can often cost around $5,000. Some facilities charge as much as $10,000 for outpatient treatment.
Intensive Outpatient Rehab
Intensive outpatient care is a more thorough form of outpatient healthcare. It generally involves multiple appointments per semaine that last approximately three hours each. This treatment can be between $3,000 and $10,000 over 30 days.
Partial Hospitalization Programs

Programs for free
Even though treatment centers are expensive, many facilities offer payment assistance or sliding fees scales. Some programs are free and paid for by the state. These state-sponsored programs often have long wait lists.
For those in recovery, support groups such as Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous can be a great option. These 12-step programs have been helping millions of people to achieve and maintain sobriety for more than 60 years through regular meetings. Many faith-based organizations also offer free treatment options.
