Psycho-Dynamics considers mental illness and trauma to be precursors to addiction. Many rehabilitation centers deal with "co-occurring", or substance abuse disorder and mental illness.

It is common to use certain opioid medications such methadone and more buprenorphine to treat addiction or dependence on heroin, morphine, or oxycodone. Methadone and buprenorphine serve as maintenance therapies that help curb cravings for opiates. They can be taken for indefinite periods of time as maintenance drugs or as detoxification medications. All available studies collected in the 2005 Australian National Evaluation of Pharmacotherapies for Opioid Dependence suggest that maintenance treatment is preferable, with very high rates (79-100%) of relapse within three months of detoxification from levo-a-acetylmethadol (LAAM), buprenorphine, and methadone.
