Some people prefer detoxing in their own homes. If you don't have health insurance or can't afford a treatment program, this option may be a good choice.

Before entering rehab, it is essential to be aware of what to expect during detox. The detoxification process can last from days to weeks as the body adjusts. Side effects and withdrawal symptoms may be experienced by some people during this process. These are some examples of detox.

Researchers have a variety of models to help them understand how addictions develop. There are four main Behavioral Models for addiction: the Moral Model (or Disease Model), Socio-Cultural Model, Psycho-dynamic Model and Socio-Cultural Model. According to the Moral Model, addiction is moral weakness. The person who is addicted is responsible. The Moral Model supports drug abuse as an option for all people, including those who are addicted. Addicts are considered to be bad characters. According to the Disease Model of addiction, substance abuse is a "chronic relapsing disease that affects the brain's structure and function". The neurobiological aspects of addiction have been subject to mixed research. It is the only possible treatment option. Socio-Cultural Modell tries to explain why some populations are more prone to substance abuse than other. It looks at how the marginalized can become more susceptible to addiction due to discrimination, poor life quality, low opportunity and other problems. Psycho-Dynamic modeling considers trauma and mental illness as precursors to addiction. Many rehabilitation centers will treat co-occurring disorders. This refers to substance abuse disorder that is also accompanied by a mental diagnosis.

We believe that the best way to achieve long-lasting sobriety is with a continuum. We believe that comprehensive and progressive drug treatment programs provide the best possible recovery. Each stage builds on previous ones, allowing for a more holistic and comprehensive approach. We can help you from beginning to end with the best drug treatment.

We don't believe that substance use should be treated in a cookie-cutter way. We believe in a person-centered, compassionate approach. Our care is tailored to your unique needs and physical and mental health, no matter what stage you are in your recovery.

As there are no standards to measure recovery, the definition of recovery is subjective and divided in drug rehabilitation. Betty Ford Institute defined the definition of recovery as "complete abstinence", while other studies used "near-abstinence" to describe it. This wide variety of meanings makes it difficult to select rehabilitation programs.

It is common to use certain opioid medications such methadone and more buprenorphine to treat addiction or dependence on heroin, morphine, or oxycodone. Methadone maintenance therapy and buprenorphine help reduce cravings and opiate use. They can be taken for indefinite periods of time as maintenance drugs or as detoxification medications. All available studies collected in the 2005 Australian National Evaluation of Pharmacotherapies for Opioid Dependence suggest that maintenance treatment is preferable, with very high rates (79-100%) of relapse within three months of detoxification from levo-a-acetylmethadol (LAAM), buprenorphine, and methadone.

Multiple addiction treatments have been proven to be successful and are often combined.

Many medications used in detox include medication that mimics the effects of drugs to relieve withdrawal symptoms. You may also need medication to treat co-occurring conditions or general discomfort.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health estimates that around 8.1% of Americans (or 21.7 million) need to or receive treatment for substance-related disorders.
